Photos: Inside Buenos Aires’ recycling “green centers”

Some 10,000 cartoneros, or waste-pickers, ply the streets of Buenos Aires. And as Citiscope reported this week, the city has begun embracing them as part of its formal recycling program. Cartoneros who are members of cooperatives now receive steady pay, health and pension benefits. They also can work out of new “green centers,” warehouses where they can sort recyclables indoors. Photographer Patricio Murphy and I visited two of these centers, as well as the headquarters of the Argentine Federation for Cartoneros and Recyclers. Here’s what we saw. (See related story.)
