The world’s greenest school is in one of Asia’s most polluted cities: Hong Kong. Sing Yin Secondary School, which serves poor students, boasts solar panels, wind turbines, green roofs and LED lighting to promote energy conservation, Fast Company reports.

On Oct. 16, the U. S. Green Building Council and its Center for Green Schools named both the secondary school and the Uaso Nyiro Primary School in Kenya’s Laikipia county the “Greenest School on Earth.” The full press release is here.

Fast Company characterizes the Hong Kong school as the winner for its comprehensive approach to energy reduction and programs that keep students engaged about environmental protection.

The Kenyan school, located in an impoverished area, was recognized for collecting, storing and filtering rainwater to provide schoolchildren with safe drinking water.
