Maya Kaneko is an editor and reporter for the English news service of the World Services Section of Kyodo News, a leading Japanese news agency.
Since joining the wire service provider in 1998, she has been in charge of reporting on various topics concerning Japan and translating Japanese language news into English.
In her 15-year career, Maya has covered a wide range of topics — trade, finance, market news, politics, foreign affairs, security and climate change. She has covered such international events as IMF-World Bank and WTO meetings, Group of Eight conferences, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum and U. N. climate change conferences.
She joined a Japanese journalist training program organized by the International Center for Journalists in Washington D. C. in 2004 and worked at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as part of the program. In 2012, she was awarded the Hawaii-based East-West Center’s Jefferson fellowship.
Kaneko received her Bachelor of Arts degree in area studies from the Department of English Studies of the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Sophia University in 1998.
